SALDEE Infographic: Science Assessments for Language Diversity in Early Elementary Classrooms

Authors : Kate Borelli

This infographic describes a suite of NGSS-aligned formative science assessments for linguistically diverse first-grade classrooms that includes 32 individual and small-group tasks, videos, stories, manipulatives, worksheets, and easy-to-use color-coded rubrics for life, earth, and physical science. Visual examples of tasks and teacher quotes show how the assessments use multimodal activities (drawing, talking, circling, designing) to engage students and collect rich evidence of their science understanding and enjoyment.

Three Lessons Learned from Collaborating with Teachers on First-Grade Formative Science Assessment Design

Authors : Kate Borelli

The SALDEE research team is working with elementary science teachers in the development of a suite of formative assessment tasks designed to meet first graders where they are in their language and literacy development.

OpenSciEd Impact Evaluation

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education conducts an impact evaluation of the science curriulum OpenSciEd in Boston, MA middle schools.

Science Projects Integrating Computing and Engineering (SPICE)

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education designed and developed a computational modeling curriculum for upper elementary students using a principled design process based on established design approaches–Evidence Centered Design, Knowledge Integration, and Informed Engineering. The unit developed was a 6-week unit that integrated science, engineering, and computational thinking concepts and practices.

A Multisource Automated Tool for Measuring Science Teachers’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge (MASTer-PCK)

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education researchers are creating machine learning models to assess teacher pedagogical content knowledge using a variety of teacher artifacts. This project leveraged large language models as a way to enhance data collection for machine learning training.

Collaborative Partnership to Teach Mathematical Reasoning Through Computer Programming

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education partnered with the University of North Alabama to help middle school mathematics students understand, interpret, and generate algebraic expressions through Python programming. This implementation and impact study focused on professional development to support teachers in leading the programming activities with their students.

Computational Modeling for Integrating Science and Engineering Design (CMISE): Model Construction, Manipulation, and Exploration

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education conducts a series of experiments to systematically compare different computational modeling activities on 5th and 6th grade students’ engineering design processes, their understanding of engineering, science and computational thinking concepts, as well as science teachers’ confidence and ability to implement integrated STEM and computing curricula.

Region 11 Comprehensive Center Evaluation

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education partners with state departments of education, the regional centers provide capacity-building and intensive technical assistance services and help to implement, scale, and sustain evidence-based programs, practices, and interventions that support improved educator and student outcomes. The evaluation of the Center focuses on the extent to which the work is of high quality, relevant, and useful, and the degree to which capacity building and student outcomes were achieved.

Integrated Science and Literacy Curriculum (ISLC) Efficacy Study

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education partnered with WestEd and Lawrence Hall of Science to examine the efficacy of a research-based integrated science and literacy curriculum (ISLC) designed to support integrated science, language, and literacy learning in first grade.

Science Assessments for Language Diversity in Early Elementary Classrooms (SALDEE)

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education designs and develops first grade formative science assessments, using an evidence centered design approach, that incorporates design principles for equity and inclusion for language diversity.

CoolThink@JC Implementation Study

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education is conducting a comprehensive implementation study of the CoolThink@JCcomputational thinking curriculum in Hong Kong primary schools. The project will evaluate and advise on the initiative’s goals of supporting high-quality adoption in over 200 primary schools and laying a foundation throughout the system for more widespread adoption.

Developing a Suite of Standards-based Instructionally Supportive Tools for Middle School Computer Science (ASSIST-MSCS)

Authors : Kate Borelli

SRI Education develops a set of educative resources, assessment tools and teacher professional development (PD) activities to support teachers in developing knowledge of CS standards and improving their instructional pedagogy. Teachers learn to use formative assessments related to these standards to determine student understanding.
